My 2506, picked up off e-bay, has a small crack in the body/sole which I did not at first notice, until I came to investigate why it was so darned hard to adjust. Anyway, the crack is in the main casting, by the mouth, and is presumably caused by overtightening (not by me, I hasten to add) the cutter clamping screw. Whilst it still works after a fashion, it means a bit of care in tightening the screw enough to clamp the cutters, without distorting the sole. I'm guessing that this is a common fault ?

Any hope of repairing it ? Dremmel a slight groove along the crack and fill with braze/silver solder/... Or should I get another and use this one as spares ?

Have a go at repairing it, if it doesn't work get another one. I have seen plenty of brazed planes still in use and as far as I'm aware there are no problems if its done well.

Well it's not working well at the moment. so even if you make a hash of it nothing has been spoilt, I would braze it or have it brazed.
If you had it nickel plated it should look like new.

I had toyed with making an intentional pun out of that one !

Thanks for the advice Matt and Pete. I'll see if I can give it a go. The idea of replating it to hide the repair had not occurred to me, but sounds like a nice idea.
