Hi all

Managed to knock up a couple of small projects this weekend. Another Ash box but this time with detachable lid and a kitchen drawer organiser (I hate plastic ones) made from the Oak gateposts I ripped down and talked about in a previous post
Hope you like 'em - fun and quick to make and both finished in Danish Oil

Cheers

Tony

Tony,

I like the drawer organiser - inspires me to do something about getting a growing collecion of gouges into some sort of order! Isn't it satisfying when you have a short project like that that worlks out well and that you can complete in a reasonably short time?

Hi Tony

They look really good and I think the Danish oil sets them off well.

I loved the drawer organiser and you've inspired me to make one.

Sorry to question your use, and you're probably right, but is Danish oil the correct finish to be in contact with cutlery? IIRC I thought I'd read somewhere that you should use linseed or some other oil.

As I say, I'm probably totally wrong but I do get paranoid when wood finishes come into contact with food and utensils.

Apologies, in advance.

Cheers

Thanks Chris

I love these small projects. At the moment I seem to be making very little progress with my two Ash bedside cabinets and making these little items has given me immense satisfaction and motivated me for the main job.

I found another photo showing the top of the box and added that to the gallery

Neil, good point about the Danish Oil, I used it because I seem to always finish projects with it
I didn't see any warning on the can and it is a mixture of plant oils. Anyone know if Danish is alright for this application?

I really like Linseed oil but it takes ages and ages to dry.

Cheers

Tony

Danish oil will be OK. Like most such concoctions (Liberon finishing oil etc.) it is basically a very long oil varnish (a polymerising oil like Tung or Linseed plus some resins and maybe some Japan driers.

When dry they will be fine - just don't go sipping the liquids to test them!

Tony, excellent job on the cutlery tray, it looks really nice, inspiring indeed.
What joints did you use? I can't see on the picture.

Hi Chris

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Hi Tony

Sorry.

The consolation is that I did sign in.

Is your little village in the East Midlands?

Cheers
Neil

Hi CYC

Simple butt joints on all inner sections with some dowls for support on outer corners. Clamped and glued with PVA. Quick and easy to make was the key phrase I had in mind :) Also, when in the drawer, one cannot see the joints and so I felt dovetails or finger joints would achieve nothing on this one.

Neil
'My' little village is fairly close to M1 J22 (Leicester area)

Chris

Thanks for the reassurance - at least we will be able to eat with cuttlery tonight

Cheers

Tony

Tony I agree with you, I wouldn't expect to see dovetail joints for this project, however I was wondering if you did dadoes for the end of the partitions.
Good job, it really looks good :D
