Crikey ...that's impressive ! Is that kind of club set up typical (like an epic men's shed) or are you just lucky ?

Quick question ...the learner being trained pic looks like they're hollowing end grain using a bowl gouge ? I've tended to sink a central hole with a small forstner bit then open up with a bowl or spindle gouge. Is it more typical these days to use special hollowing tools (like the one-way 'termite') or do moat folk use gouges ?

(erm...sry about hijacking thread ...maybe the second part is better moved elsewhere?)

Yes, start a new thread, I'm sure it will be of interest. :D

Well as someone who was only recently introduced to the set-up at CAW by phil.p (Thursday night), I can tell you that the set-up IS as impressive as it looks - I was pretty impressed myself! Also, it is used - the lathes were over-subscribed last Thursday.

I'd have thought it was a 3/8th spindle gouge - that's what is usually used. The initial hole (pictured) and the further hollowing would be done with that and another tool possibly used to tidy up the end grain.
