I finally got round to producing a brief video on some of my colouring techniques, I know a few have wanted me to do this for some time, but I only just got a camera suitable for the job.

Please excuse the rather amateurish production, (I should have turned the heater off earlier!) I think you should at least be able to get some idea from this video, the end result looks rather dark, that's as much to do with the angle of the lighting as anything else, it will look a lot different once lacquered and photographed under better lighting.

Anyway, I hope the video proves to be of some interest.

Very informative Kim, thanks. :) I was actually thinking of the Andy Coates video when I asked the question.

Thanks also for your reply in the Magnetic Sound thread.

A great first video Kim a little stage frieght at the beginning but you settled down nicely. I think you summed it up nicely at the end about just experimenting and having a go, I know that when I first used colour or even texturing a piece the nerves of setting to a bowl or whatever it is you have spent time turning and finishing only to set to it with colours and other tools and the thought of "what happens if I mess it up". I think it is just a case of have a try and most of all enjoy yourself.
What brushes did you use are they artist ones.

Very much appreciate the effort Kim, thanks for taking the time to make this.

My first effort at colouring looked downright awful and put me off for a while - I'll be following this like it was a religious text when I get around to try #2

Thanks v much.

Nic.

Thanks Nick, do pop over to the blog where I have put up a couple of pictures of the bowl dry but no lacquer, you can see the colours better. I have finished lacquering it today and will put some finished pictures up once I take the shots, it looks so different lacquered!

I bought several packs of those brushes Derek, what I do is have one for each colour, I store them upside down in a jar, I don't bother washing them out at all as the pigments just set a little, but come fully free again once you use the brush with the spirit stain, saves on both stain and meths.

In the video I started to say, I use the colours straight from the container, I meant to continue with, "But I only rarely leave the colour as is, and mostly go over it with another colour to create a mix as this softens and adds to the depth and interest in the colours"

I'm glad it's proved useful anyway. :)
