Hi im building a sleeper coffee table for the first time can you tell me if I use 16mm dowels for the legs would I have to glue too and what glue is the best =D>

I am guessing at your design, but if you mean for dowelling the top to the legs, then I wouldnt glue them. I guess you mean something like http://www.bouf.com/pinboard/pin-images ... 90-org.jpg?

The weight of sleeper sections will keep it in place, and if it is all glued together it ill be a nightmare to move due to its weight. I (personally) would make the dowel holes loose in the top- you could glue them in the legs if you wanted. They are only really for helping you align the table when you are putting it in its final place. As for glue, a bit of normal pva wood glue will do. I am not sure if you know, since you say that this is a first time, but buy some fresh glue rather than use stuff that has been hanging around for years from another job. I buy it in a suitable size to last from spring to late autumn- frost and cold destroy it, so it man be a false economy to buy in huge bulk. Any that I have left in the spring, I throw and buy some more. I dont know if you have toolstation in derry, but a litre of glue is about £4 over here- not worth risking the previous years stuff!

Thanks very much for that advice and I will take it on board , I thought the weight would hold it strong and I thought I would use a dark varnish on the wood as they are new green ones then do 3 coats and hope it comes up a treat .

i take it that you know green wood will move and split all over the place as it drys? It might actually need pegging if it is green and going inside- otherwise it might not sit flat on the legs. Not an area of woodworking that I know anything at all about! Also, even if you start with a flat top, it wont be flat for long!

I wouldnt varnish it.
