Cockerel and Hen Clock - Finished

Here's a present I decided to make for my Mum to quickly fill in the gap for the birthday Schwibbogen (see previous post) that I didn't finish in time. In the end this turned out even harder to make so is now going to be a Mother's Day present!

It's 1.5" oak, designed by my good self and is my first attempt at making something "real" with hardwood. It's also my first clock as inspired by posters on this very forum.

Tough learning curve; you can see some of the "character adding" burns plus you cannot see some of the mistakes at the back where I've bent the blade by trying too hard.

Every make is a lesson!

Thanks for the feedback Brian. I've got a handheld oscillating tool, I guess that could work? I've also tried sanding with my Dremel but I can't get the hang of that, perhaps I just need more practice. I've actually had great success with the sanding strips that fit on the scroll saw although I hear not many people rate them - the flexibility of them taking/maneuvering around a curve is excellent, I'm going to try making my own with and without lollipop sticks to see if I can replicate their usefulness cheaply.

I love the profiles, and they're nicely cut, but I think the wood looks too thick.

To me it looks more like one of the early stages in the making of a sculpture.

Thanks for your nice comments everyone. Bugbear - having handled the item and enjoyed it's "bulk" I don't agree but I can certainly see your point of view and appreciate your honesty.

Attached is the full sized silhouette I created. It's almost a full sheet of A4 long (29.2cm at 200dpi, A4 is 29.7cm) so unless you can print with little to no margins you might need to print it on A3 or reduce it's size slightly.

I forgot to add in my first post - I had a nightmare between the cockerel's legs, if you'll pardon the expression!

I was drilling the feed hole and my drill bit snapped off inside leaving about 5mm protruding which wasn't enough to pull it out as it was embedded so tightly. Despite multiple attempts to lever it out I was dangerously close to damaging the front surface so ultimately had to drill another small hole and very carefully, very slowly, saw towards and around the slightly angled bit so that I could remove it with the wood. You'll notice the final product has a rounder gap between the legs than the template but thankfully it all worked OK in the end and there's no visible damage.

It's all part of the learning curve

An excellent work you have produced and I'm sure your Mum was delighted. Something she can treasure and always be thinking of you. Well done.

Those bobin sanders work very well, I have one as well as other sanders, which all help on different items. Well worth getting, even second hand, as I did.
