Any advise or tips for cleaning light rust from a ribbed Jet planer thicknesser bed? I’ve tried scourer, wd40, white spirit, light rub with brass wire brush but not having much luck. I have Liberon lubricating wax for surface once clean.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Daryl

To make it work and low friction you just need to rub a candle over it and then use it a few times.
If that's not enough then wet with white spirit and a few passes with fine wet n dry on a block. Candle again when dry.
If you want to remove it cosmetically then you have a big job in front of you!

Cheap and easy way is place kitchen towels soaked in any vinegar and leave over night, or a few days depending on the strength of the vinegar.

Evaporust removes the rust well, but you need to get something soaked with it, and cover with foil, so it would not dry up. Leave for up to 24hrs. Rince&clean with water. It migh get a little darker, but you can go over it with a towel, and clean, buff it out. Then you should lubricate & protect it.

Cleaning Cast Iron Tables

To really get rid of it you need a chemical solution. ANY abrasive treatment will just skate over the pits caused by the rusting, unless you gp so far as to remove all the pitted metal by remachining, you dont want to do that. Clean thoroughly with meths or thinners to remove any trace of oil or grease. Kitchen towels soaked in a weak solution of phosphoric acid will remove it all. Just cover with cling film and leave for an hour or two. Or you can use a stronger solution and swab with cotton wool balls. Will remove every trace of rust without damaging the table. Once done wipe over with meths or similar to remove the residual acid. Will leave a matt pale grey appearance, quick going over with fine wire wool and a light oil will bring it up nice and shiny again. Long term use a good quality wax car polish or any of the various machine wax products available.
