Greetings all. A friend of mine has asked me to turn him some porthole surrounds for his boat. I've never made these before and I thought I'd see if there is a tried and tested method out there. The size is about 12" outer diameter and 10" inside. I thought I'd mount the mahogany on a piece of waste as a back board and then a screw chuck . Having rounded the outside edge I thought I could hollow out the internal edge down to the backboard (I will take care to ensure that the screws holding the mahogany to the back board are holding the centre piece as well as what will become the 'ring') and then unscrew. Does this sound safe and sensible? Any suggestions welcome, as he's coming over tomorrow morning. Aye, Don

Hi

I turn my spinning wheel rims in a similar way, (I don't use screw chucks), and then finish off the 'back' face by re mounting on Cole jaws.
