Hi new dutch user here,

I recently I got an old Fobco Star.
I'm in the process of doing a full disassemble bearing replacement and restoration.

Only I can't see how I get the chuck removed.i have got a manual from Tony Griffen @ lathes.co.uk.

But It looks like mine is different or I'm not smart enough ;)

There are not morse taper holes or something so I'm guessing it's threaded ?

Bet you a British pound it's on a taper......
seem to remember a friend having similar probs....
in the end after a lot of soul serching he gave a bang with a copper mallet and it fell on the floor......
I don't know that model in person......so take no notice of me.....
is it hollow all the way through ?
can you get a long rod and give a smack from the oposite end to the chuck....?
sorry about the English expressions, smack and bang.....using a hammer /mallet....

Have already tried some light smacking with a wooden mallet.

I have created some photos from different angles, don't know if it's any use. Also have managed to get the top ring of that's sits above the top bearing. But that doesn't help (It was a bit stuck because of some metal burs from the screw that held it in place

In the first few photos I think I see it’s a Rohm chuck. If you get photos of the text on the chuck you’ll be able to work out the chuck configuration, this will tell you if you have a chuck with a taper or not.

I’d bet it’s a taper. Mine was tough to get off, but locking the quill in the drill head and the knocking the chuck off with some strong blows got mine loose. With the quill out the drill head it’ll be hard to hold the quill secure to knock the chuck off.

If it is a taper you should be able to see the last vestiges appearing out of the chuck. If not, it may well be a UNF thread. You could try carefully holding the quill broach in a broad soft-jaw vice and see if the chuck can be removed counter-clockwise with a large Stillson or equivalent, (viewed from jaws!). Have you looked up into the chuck to see if there's a lock-screw present?

Hi bijsters
Looking at the first two photos there appears to be a hole a little way up the shaft - away from the chuck. I wonder if that is to insert a bar to knock the chuck out from what will most probably be a taper fit. Try looking in the hole with torch and magnifying glass - you may be able to see the end of a long taper on the chuck. good luck
or as suggested by Limey Lurker get some wedges such as
