When I'm sharpening a chisel it chatters as I push forward. What could be the reason? I use a honing guide and I have tried a whetstone and a diamond stone both produce the same result. Also after a while the stone has becomes clogged with black marks. I think this is coming off the wheel on the honing guide. Am I putting to much pressure on the guide?

Are you using plenty of lubricant.
The black marks could be the steel particles which if not enough lubricant stay on the stone and then clog it reducing its ability to cut
What angle are you sharpening at? It could be you are putting too much pressure on causing the edge to dig into the stone, particularly with softer waterstones

You need to freshen up an oil stone at intervals to get rid of the swarf, which gets bedded in.
I use a 3m diapad - cheaper on Ebay:

Just a quick rub over with a bit of white spirit.
Helps to lift off swarf with a powerful magnet before it gets stuck.
If you are struggling with a jig try doing it without. It's faster and easier.
With a jig you need to put as little pressure as possible on the wheel and concentrate it on the edge as far as poss.

Probably, you should be putting gentle but firm pressure - I use both forefingers - on the back of the chisel, directly above the point of contact, and none on the honing guide. Push too hard and you'll shorten the life of the diamond stone and tire yourself for no benefit!

Thanks everyone for your help. I set the blades at 30mm, 30' for chisel, & 40mm, 25' for plane, off the leading edge as recommended on the side on the guide. As far as oil goes, I was told that it can leave marks on you work and water is recommended by the stone manufacturer that I have (Bearmoo). So I guess I must be putting too much pressure on the wheel of the guide. The edges cut reasonably well but I guess they could be better.

If you use oil you wipe it off before you use the tool. Oily rags are handy in the workshop for a quick wipe down of other metal things besides sharpened blades.
