My better half wants me to put a pair of doors over the front of a 1mx1m shelving unit. She wants the chicken and perimeter frame look, no bevels or moldings, just plain and simple. Construction type is up to me. I only have hand tools, but that shouldn't make much difference on this project, so half lap, full lap, mitre, or ? What is the best way forward for lightweight framing like this? I'll probably be using 3x1 hardwood but nothing is set in stone yet.

Half lap would be simple and perfectly strong enough. As would dowels. With that thickness of timber, mortice and tenon is a possibility if you're up for the challenge. Avoid mitres - difficult to fit accurately, will gap if the wood moves at all, and no inherent strength unless you use dowels as well.
