Chess Board

Had a go at a chess board and quite pleased with the outcome

Had some oak and mahogany so used that - first glue up

Then crosscut on table saw with sled to make the squares

Planed flat using router with a surfacing bit in a jig (no planer yet - next purchase I think!)

Groove cut in the board and tongue added to the edging

Glueing the edging

Oiled with OSMO Polyx 3032 Satin (2 coats)

Finished board with some chess pieces I purchased (no lathe!) and a sneak preview of a box I built to store the pieces to complement the board - with a mini chessboard lid.

Did you worry/consideration to the expansion of the wood, since it's not veneered? will the mitres open up do you think?

Thanks - its my first time doing anything like this and new to doing stuff this way - I had a good read up and watched many you tube videos of people making boards using solid timber, many of them end grain for the surface, but some of the face grain. I did add splines to the mitres too (forgot to picture them) and used the oak

I dont know is the honest answer! If it does, then gives me an excuse to have another go and I'll have learned something new too

Looks really good. But i think you are going to have trouble with expansion as you have used solid timber. I would have let the board float within a frame.

Saying all that i hope it remains stable
