I happened to be in Robert Dyas (Hardware chain) today and saw they had a large number of half price "Quick type" Clamps. They have a 12" capacity and were £4.99 for 2, not the best in the world but seem to be OK for the money. I got two pair.
They can be used as spreaders too.
