I have a 1HP induction motor which looks quite old but still works fine. However it turns the wrong way and I want to reverse the direction of rotation. There is a label on the terminal box cover which states which terminals to connect the L and N to, and which to connect the capacitor to. The terminals are labelled 1 (Live) 2 and 3 (capacitor) and 4 (Neutral). The label also states which wires to change to reverse rotation but the writing is illegible, although it obviously is possible to reverse it. All the details I've found on the web seem to label the terminals U1, U2 etc but I don't know what to do with terminals 1-4.

So, does anyone know which connexions I need to change over based on the above information?

Many thanks.

Have a look at Bob Minchin's excellent PDF, Page 8.

What you need to do is swap the two feeds for the start wiring.

You will need to trace both ends of the start winding with a continuity tester, (test meter or battery and bulb.)

If by some chance the start winding is centre tapped to the main wiring (see PDF) then you just need to swap the capacitor feed wire from Live to Neutral or Visa Versa.

What Make and Model motor is it, may be possible to find a better diagram of your missing instructions on the web.

Looks about right. Try it out in a circuit with a ~5A breaker. Much can't go wrong.
