For those who may remember the previously completed backsaw I posted photo's of, I made comment that I wanted to make some changes to the shaping of the handle as well as move from 2 to 3 saw bolts.

Here's a reminder of that handle shape.

To make it must easier to visualize the changes I have now moved to I have overlapped this new handle template over the earlier shape used. As you can see these changes included a slightly larger cheek to accept that 3rd saw bolt; the grip length has been made longer to further increase the range of compatible hand sizing; as well I have lowered the top profile from beak through to the top horn.

Now onto my latest backsaw build using this new handle shape. The handle wood is again black walnut; and the saw plate has been sharpened 16tpi soft rip.

Hi

Lovely saws =D> =D> - one day I must have a go at making some 'quality' tools.

From an aesthetic viewpoint I prefer the original shape, does the second version have a better 'feel' in the hand / is it more ergonomic?

Regards Mick

Thanks Mick. Both handle's feel very good in the hand. What drives my interest in saw making is the ability to create differences in handle shape. The rest of the work required although important to get it right I find rather repetitive and laborious to complete. But I complete each of those steps required to the best of my ability.

I like both shapes but wonder if the first had a noticeable rock on the two bolts ?

Hi Graham. I agree with the fact that a 3 bolt fit is much easier to lock the blade in firmly. But 2 bolts can be as effective by adding a couple of safe guards. First I make sure that that the angle at the back of the saw plate is shaped so it presses hard up against where the sawn slot ends on the inside edge of handle cheek. This removes the potential for any slight downward movement of the handle once the saw bolts have been fitted . With the saw bolts fitted I make sure the brass back is pushed back hard against the back of the mortise slot. The hardback is then secure into position using loctite without disassembling the saw so their is no chance of this position being altered. This removes the potential for slight upward movement in the handle. Each of the steps insure the 2 screw bolt handle remains rock solid when assembled.
