My CD Rom drive works intermittently, when I put a CD in the drive sometimes its works OK anothertime it keeps asking for a disk to be input.

I suspect and hope this is just a dirty head.

Does anyone know about cdrom drive cleaning?

I have got a bottle of that acholol stuff for cleaning video equipment does this work on cdrom drives or is there something more sophisticated needed.

I had similar problems for a while with mine. In the end it would incorrectly read files, causing much mayhem!
I tried all sorts of cleaners but in the end had to give up and buy a new one.
Maybe you could buy a dvd burner instead-they also read and burn cd's!

DW

CD readers are around £10 now and CD writers around £35. Also DVD writers retail aound £80 incl vat

A new purchase might be easier and not much more expensive than trying to clean and sort the old one

Yeah I think I will have to shake the dust of my wallet,
its just that I had this spray bottle of iso.acholol and didnt want to use it if it is a no no. ?

Laser lens should be glass so a quick spray and wipe should be OK

No luck with spray.

Getting bad news also about using an external cdrom drive or even getting hold of an internal cd read only drive. Being advised not to fit the new DVD/cd drives.

wurries, wurries, wurries New tablesaw going on hold.

DevonWoody,

I haven't used external drives because I prefer mine in the case and I don't have the need to take 120GB of MP3 to a friend's house :)

Fitting internal drives is quite easy for anybody of a mild technical nature: I've got two PCs with combined collection of Acer DVD/CD reader, Panasonic CD reader/writer, Panasonic DVD/CD reader/writer and a recently acquired NEC DVD dual-layer reader/writer - all fitted myself and all worked first time.

The absolute golden rule is to make sure you use decent quality disk media - the likes of Verbatim (my normal brand), Maxell, Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, Philips, HP etc will be fine. Only cheap ones I've used were Imation - absolutely terrible so avoid like the plague.

Drop me an email if you need some help fitting one.

Thanks Pitbull

Mine is a laptop though and getting adverse comments about fitting or buying cd drives. Any further advice appreciated.

Laptops - ah - don't really know too much about them as I don't use them very often these days and most components are quite specialised (to the extent that whilst building your own desktop PC is a bit of a doddle with lots of components to choose from, building your own laptop is something best left to the masochistic).

Having said that, if your laptop has got a USB (preferably USB2) or FireWire port, I cannot see why attaching an external (preferably self-powered) CD or DVD drive should be a problem. If you've got WinXP or Win2K it will work better (better O/S, better driver support) but even Win98SE can handle USB without too many problem.

What warnings have you been told about attaching such drives ?

i have had a very old toshiba laptop for a long time in the loft, I`ll see if I can find it , if I can and you chuck me the postage you are welcome to the cd drive (is yours removable?) if I rememer you can swap the cd drive for a floppy.......

if not, the I have used and external cd burner for years. Its a sony jobbie which looks exactly like a personal cd player (and is one as well!).

I have NEVER EVER had ANY problems with it what so ever (on USB1).
I never get any problems either burning or reading cds, and I really do abuse the hell out of it (chucked in box, hot swapping all the time).

I`ll see if I can source that cd drive for you.

If yours is removeable, wip it out and tell me any numbers that are on the bottom.

steve

Sure am interested steeve.

My drives a toshiba 2018 GAP. according to the system, device manager, cd rom drive, cant see any numbers on the gear but I suspect its a generic drive. Computer came from Time computers last year and I expec t they buy in bulk.

Postage no problem, just name your price.

is it removeable?

is the actual drive located in a plastic "shuttle" that can be removed?

my laptop is a very old Tosh satellite pro (about 6/7 years old).

I`m sure that there is an external floppy drive with mine, and they can be interchanged, does this sound like yours?

pretty sure mine looks exactly like this:

OK Steeve

drive withdrawn (one screw)
details are DVD-Rom drive SD-C2612 Toshiba.

This drive was put in by Time computers back in April when laptop was still in guarantee, it looks like they used the lates drive available from their stock.

(The wife has only used the drive about 4 times since April , but Time computers are OK with guarantee work whist in force but they charge a £1 per minute to just speak to them once your guarantee as run out, and they also usually donet want to know you at the end of the day unless you are buying.

Picture of my drive at link below:-

Have you tried carefully wiping all the contacts on the connector on the back of the DVD-ROM using a cotton bud and some alcohol?

just as as little note, you should consider you`re options carefully..... if you ever have to re-install the operating system you MAY have problems using the exernal drive (if the internal one is shot).

I would be going out on a limb here but i THINK that windows XP installation supports usb devices (and possibly fiwi as well), if not you could be looking at trying to get somebody to setup a dos system with some drivers just to get the cd drive to run the xp install disk (not easy).

may never happen, but just a thourght.......

I think I am cornered, I have come to the conclusion that one of the pressure springs attached to the laptops chassis which bears against the rom drive as gone adrift (broken anchorage point)
I cannot see a replacement laptop case being practical.
The suggestion by Steeve of installation system program problems with an external drive certainly makes the future uncertain. The lady will have to stick with the software already installed on her laptop without any new additions.
