I've got a chest of drawers
DE5jYdw
with these approx. dimensions: 140cm tall, 90cm wide, 60cm deep. Drawer fronts are 25cm top to bottom. Top cabinet section (two doors) is 40cm ttb.

I think that might make it suitable for repurposing as a "captain's bed". Putting drawers side-by-side would be around the same length as a standard mattress.

The plan would be to create a 'bunk bed'-like frame, into which the drawer sections (on castors) would fit. Just playing around with ideas at this point.

Have you ever sectioned up a piece of furniture like a chest of drawers? Any useful tips to pass on?

Ta!

As the cabinet is only 2 ft front to back, and a normal bed is 3 ft wide, I presume youre going to make a proper bedframe and just slide the drawer sets underneath?
I dont see any problem with that.
But if the bottom section is a metre high, by the time you add casters youll have to make steps for someone to climb into bed. Unless you lose one of the bottom drawers to even out the heights.

pic not showing - hard to visualise without it.

I've managed to upload some photos now. Tried to show the interior of the carcass - I'm thinking of making the cut just above the rail. That's really the thing I'm figuring out at the moment.

Furniture glides seem to be the best option (it's for a boat). You're right though, I hadn't yet thought of a ladder, but I think there'll be space to the side to store a small one. The space at the back might be a good place to store a guest frame/mattress, but first things first...
