Carving Mallets

When turning a head for one should the grain run from the top to bottom or left to right?

I'll put up some pics of the pieces that I am going to glue together, not really sure which way the grain runs on them.

Top to bottom, at least for round (turned) mallets. Otherwise you risk shortgrain failure in use.
