have a look on the benchcrafted blog. There were a lot of pictures, and I think perhaps even a link to their plans. They may be on their main site, but I have a feeling not. I will have a look in a few mins for you

I am sure I have seen plans somewhere. I also think you could do a similar/less flash version using more readily available compoenets- A vice screw and a carriage bolt, for instance.

IIRC Taranti (and Record) used to publish a plan for them, based around a Record bench screw.

I'll try to find a copy, unless one of the other tool-history fans posts first.

.

If it's any use to you, I wrote about rebuilding an old Tiranti Scopas chops last year.
It's in 5 parts and here' a link to the first which will lead to to the rest in sequence.

http://handmadeinwood.wordpress.com/201 ... ers-chops/

The wooden parts of old chops were splitting and past repair, so I reused the metal work, brackets and screw etc. and increased the overall size a little bit bit, but the basic construction of it remains the same. The first part deals with repairing the metalwork, the second and subsequent parts are concerned with the woodwork and cutting the big dovetails.

No plans, as such but plenty of pictures and I hope it helps with visualising the build and the joints required.

Googling turned up this (image)

I love how the rail does double duty as a front jaw reinforcement - neat.

(sadly, this vise was on a stolen items website in NZ - the original owner no longer has it)

A bit of a coincidence, my current project is a pair of carver's chops for SWMBO. I'm very loosely following the Benchcrafted plans but making my own hardware.

And here is the finished result

Wow. Are you quite sure that teensy motor is big enough to drive an ML4?

Nice job! Every woodworker should have a metal work lathe!
