Hi folks. I'm looking to build a carport, but not sure about best plans/materials to use. I didn't want any upkeep or issues with rot down the line, so was wondering if I should use steel box section for the uprights as they would be concreted into the ground. Was considering 40mm x 40mm 3mm galvanised box section. Do you think that would be strong enough or would 50mm be better? Although that doesn't come galvanised.

Span is only about 2m by the way, and about 6m long, give or take.

Any pointers, or plans etc? Cheers.

If you go the steel box section route. Get a local engineering/fabrication place to weld plates top/bottom with holes drilled in each corner. That way you can dig out and concrete pads for support and just bolt them to the concrete, the cover with gravel etc

Hi - I used to work for a company that supplied full carport kits - I'm no longer affiliated with the company, my choice (sort of), but I'm posting the link so you can see what I mean, as it sounds like it's just the sort of thing you're after.

It's a full metal frame cover with polycarbonate roof sections. The metal is fully powder coated and the roof section has a built in gutter system so that water runs inside the support legs. It comes in a variety of sizes, and choice of polycarb type too.

If it's a light weight construction, mine is, you will need to be able to remove the sheeting to get access to the house gutters above.
Just a thought.
