After reading all about the car boot goodies that can be had, I thought that I would give one or two of them a shot. The only trouble is I cannot find any in Aberdeenshire. So my question is does anyone know of any?

Cheers

See my posting on the other carboot thread - that refers to the Thainstone one :( .

It's big, but as said in the other posting, it's almost always a desert for any sort of tools except saltwater-rusted stuff off the rigs.

Reckon I've possibly got half a dozen tool bargains in five years.

BUT, there are occasional sales in the outlying villages that can be interesting. Kincardine Oneil has some particularly nice stuff about every six months, and the Milton of Crathes steam fair usually has some good tools, though usually more engineering than woody.

Best source is usually ScotAds, though the real bargains are usually in Thurso or Skye, which aren't that convenient for Aberdeen!

Thanks Dick, when you think of where we live, or Scotland as a whole, you would have though that there would be lots of car boot sales. You often hear about a low mileage beauty of a car found in a barn that has not been driven for 20 or 30 years. Well can you imagine the tools that are laying in barns and up and down the country that no one knows are there.

I guess the problem is that outside the central belt, most of Scotland is pretty sparsely populated (which is one reason we like it here :D ). So there weren't many craftspeople per square mile either! And where population has increased (Aberdeen, say) the incomers have mostly been "executives" or other oily persons of one sort or another, who didn't bring any nice Norrises with them that they want to sell cheaply.

And far be it for me to suggest that the natives wouldn't dream of selling anything for less than its maximum value :D

I live 3 miles from the H&W shipyard where the Tit**ic was built, 10 000 workers in its heyday, see Britsh Woodworking present issue for an example of woody achievement, do we have a good pool of hand tools now that it's all CAD and specialist shop fitters? Oh look, a porcine aviator!!
