Lucky bloke. I remember those for school days and been looking for one like it (or v similar), new or S/H, with no joy at all.

Looking again, that's an odd item. It has a lock, but no fine adjust. So aimed at people who don't want an accurate setting, but want to keep their inaccurate setting very constant. :D And yet, it won't be under a lot of force, since it's a pencil
compass and not dividers. (Workshop dividers mark by cutting, so can be used with "some vigour").

All in all, an odd combination of features. Who/What was it for?

I'd love such a gem.Even the basic compasses like the old Helix are changing hands for silly money on ebay now.I was told that it is no longer legal to sell the type that has long points and the current type has a fat stem with a very short point that is useless for scribing-or stabbing.I have a standing offer to several car boot sale visitors that I will be happy to buy any they find for a modest mark up on the purchase price and I haven't had any luck yet.

Is there a maker's name on it?

Excellent - thank you!

Ah. Can you check that please?

Bibliographic data: GB448232 (A) ― 1936-06-04

"Improvement in charge forming devices for internal combustion engines"

A similar compass sold for £16.00 on eBay recently!!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Helix-Lock-Co ... 7675.l2557

I have found this offer of a similar compass, with a different, provisional patent num - "HELIX-LOCK" PROV PAT 6537/36, with the last two digits refering to the year 1936

http://www.retonthenet.co.uk/rare-vinta ... 1265-p.asp

I can't find that patent either!
