Aden,

Might be Laburnum, but I can't see the bark properly. Inside looks as I recall Laburnum. Decorative end grain, used as thick veneers; 'oysters'. (Tiles!)

+1 for beech. Definitely not Laburnum, which even in small branches has very dark brown heartwood. Also unlikely to find a piece of laburnum of that size unless you are very lucky :D

Guess I was wrong then.
As to size, I had to fell a laburnum about 35 years ago. It was a mature tree, not much smaller in the bole than these logs. Can't say I recall the heartwood mind, but yes I think it would have been darker. I was just glad to be rid of it to prevent my children eating the seeds! :D

I remember when I was about 14yrs old trying the seed pods - quite a pleasant taste! It wasn't til a while afterwards that I found out they were poisonous. I may or may not have been sick after, I don't remember. I didn't actually swallow much (obviously!).

Many thanks to you all, I cut the timber into turning blanks and I agree its beech (very wet).

Kind regards

Aden
