...simple polishing pads that'll fit on a delta sander? i was flicking through the axminster catalogue and couldn't see what i'd think was an obvious use for a small detail sander... or am i being stupid and would the action of a sander achieve nothing here?(and big sheet sanders come to think of it)

Yes you can bosch make them as i have just sold the one i had along with 3 packs of sanding pads when my delta sander gave up the ghost.
