as a woodturner i want to apply some paint to parts of a bowl - can i put an oil over at the end - does it have to be an oil based paint ? i will be uisng mineral oil as a foodsafe finish. any help appreciated !!

This post has been up for too long without an answer!

I bought some handmade wooden bowls on Zimbabwe/South Africa in 1998. Most of them have burning-iron patterns in the wood, but one was painted in a Zulu design. After 4 years, the paint started flaking off and we don't use that bowl any more.

If you're going to paint the wood, use water-based stains, then you can put your mineral oil over it. If you paint your wood with oil-based paints, forget it.

Hope this helps.
