Hi, I'm wondering if you can help me. I'm currently trying to find somewhere that could make a batch of the item in the following link: http://www.pckarate.co.uk/1244T-LG.jpg

The item would need to be made of western red cedar or an equivalent light weight wood and would be 6 foot long and also possibly the other half of the order being 5 foot both with a diameter of 1" which tapers down to 0.5" on both ends. If you could please give my any idea of where i could get this order made i would be very greatful.

Anyone remember this thread?

You could try someone who makes architectural columns or similar, as they may have lathes sufficiently long to hold something like that, although realisitically, buying them from a specialist karate supplier has to be the best (and cheapest) option surely?

I was going to suggest "W L West" timber merchant timber yard as they both supply Western Red Cedar, and aslo have one of these snazzy multi-head planer, thicknesser and spindle moulder all in one, so you feed rough sawn wood in one end, and get dowel out the other. Problem is, I don't reckon they'd be able to get the taper on it - it'd be straight poles only.

I remembered it too (surprise). I think we scraped the bottom of the barrel as far as ideas were concerned last time.

Blimey!

Asleitch you've got a good memory

It wasn't remembering the thread that was difficult, it was finding the right combination of words in the search facility to find it. 8)

I Think it can be done using a router table and a jig. If you start with a dowel of the correct size and turn a spigot on both ends say 2" long to the 0.5 " dimension (this to be cut off later). Make a jig with a housing for the middle ( a block with correct hole through it), at the other end of the jig make another housing with a flat bottomed hole 1" deep in it. Fasten these to a base cut the with the angle required giving the correct start and finish points. Use say a 3/4" straight bearing guided cutter in a table (bearing at the bottom of the cutter, sorry can't think of correct name) run the jig past the cutter against the bearing and turn the dowel at the same time.
I think it should work giving a tapered spindle.
I could possibly draw it up on cad and post it as a pdf. I would need the taper start and end points along with the amount of parrel section in the middle.
Hope this helps. :D :D :D

All the best
Neil
