Can anyone identify this wood?

I acquired this wood from a steel yard, used as spacers between hundreds of tonnes of steel girders.

I cut the wood into a 5cm cube and it weighs 85g.... it seems really hard too. Takes some cutting!

Anything that could help would be appreciated as I want to finish it somehow but dont want it to look terrible.

Without a doubt it's Beech.
