I have been sent a couple of photographs of what I assume is a hand vice, does anyone know what it would have particularly been used for?

It has N.J. Hill&CO London EC stamped on the end, if that is any help.

Thanks

Keith

Up the proverbial creek
Keith,

It's a Bookbinder's plough for trimming the pages of a book during binding. I think the big brass thubscrew would advance the cutter, but I'm not certain. And yep, the name did help. I stuck it in Google and once I had the bookbinder's link it was easy to find the tool in The Dictionary of Woodworking Tools (they're often mistaken for woodworking tools, not surprisingly).

Cheers, Alf
