Hotmail address books are often hacked. There is not a lot you can do but change your login details, PW etc on a regular basis.
IMHO- hotmail is not a secure service. If you want webmail rather than a proper email account from your ISP, Gmail seems to be pretty good.
In fact Gmail provide the email service for your ISP John.
