Cake stand ideas

The mother-in-law has asked me to make a cake stand.

I think it is expected to be something like these:

but in wood, of course

I have hunted through google search results and can't come up with anything.
Anyone seen any pictures or designs of this sort of thing in wood?
Any suggestions on method of construction, type of wood etc?

Thanks, but I think it was a wedding cake style as in the link I included in the original post.

andrew you can hire those stands ,if you try to make them in wood it will look to bulky (wedding cakes are not light )

How about making the actual plate thingies in wood, but using threaded bar covered with chrome or brass tube for the uprights?
