At today’s boot sale I picked up a 16" C. Nurse & Co. beech wooden plane in excellent condition. It has a tapered double iron by Hearnshaw Bros. which I assume is a replacement? It seems that the plane is pre 1937 but what sort of age is the iron? I have found that Hearnshaw Bros started in the 1860’s but how long did they go on making edge tools?

I hope I didn't buy a load of junk as it cost me £2. :p

According to British Plane Makers III, Hearnshaw Brothers were in business until 1961 when they were taken over by Thomas Ellin (Footprint Tools). So your plane could be relatively new - ie twentieth century.

That said, it was a normal practice for a firm to carry on using trade marks belonging to companies they had taken over, so many brands have a much longer lifespan than their original companies.
