Burrs? what do they look like on a tree?

Hi, being new here I see a lot of people talking about wood burrs, can anyone tell me how to look for them on wood? what do they look like in the uncut stage, how do they appear on trees?

Like a wacking great wart on the trunk of a tree. Usually with loads of thin twigs growing out of them...like a tree equivalent of a pin cushion
