i have just bought a few items of ebay and within one of the auctions was an electric motor from a table saw. It's spec is "One electric motor (brushes not induction) 230v 6.5amp 5000rpm 2.7hp 50hz"

Can i use this for a disc sander if i reduce the speed? and how does one reduce the speed - pulleys??

If this is not suitable for a disc sander, what can i build from this motor.

Andy,

You can either reduce the speed using pulleys and a belt, or depending on the brand, you may be able to buy a reducing gearbox, which bolts straight onto the front of the motor. They are normally available in different reduction ratios - e.g. 2.5:1, 5:1, 10:1 etc.

Brush motors tend to be very noisy, and can be prone to overheating when used with fine dust, maybe you would be better looking out for a small induction motor.
