Here's a link to a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ljhd_WbAOw) which is part 1 of 6. The guy there reckons a 6" diameter grinding stone is the smallest you can use for woodturning in order for the bevel to rub. This is fine when the stone is new but once it wears down then it obviously becomes too small, although this may take a long time to happen. He recommends getting an 8 inch wheel which would last a lifetime for most users. Of course, this may be no more than his personal opinion.

As it happens, my wheels are 6", but if I was buying again I would pay a bit extra and go for 8".

Having said that, the Dakota from Rutlands seems very reasonably priced.
