Turning has slowed down for a week or so now as I have been gardening (removing a cherry tree mainly) and repairing a couple of benches which I have just managed to complete.

The pile of wood I was given which I spent last week cutting into the correct size and drilling holes. Then over the weekend I gave them a few coats of oil and let them dry and today assembled the two benches, I think they look pretty good and they have now earned me some extra brownie points
The wood I was given not sure what it is but suspect it could be Teak

Well they 'Turned out' OK so I would say you have not wandered too far away from the spinning shed.
There's still a few decent weather days ahead for you to be able to relax and feel satisfied with the seasons work.

Looks like sipo to me.
They cleaned up nicely, looks like a good method for gettin a cuppa brought out to ya :D

Tom

I think that's definitely Meranti, the medullary rays don't look like that with Utile (Sipo). Benches look stunning with some new timber, I think the ends look nice a bit aged and worn too.

I've never seen that square flecking with meranti, not that I have a lot, but say around 100 kgs from various reclaimed stock.
Interested if you have seen this or if I'm mistaken and the timber does not have that fleck

I haven't done anything with Meranti for years but the stuff I did use last was a lot of quartersawn stock and looked exactly like that, made for some lovely painted fascia boards

Not to say that I'm 100% correct though, you could be right also :D

They look great. What thickness are the slats? I have a bench to redo and the old slats feel rather too bendy, although it could be my weight is a factor.

Cheers

Fitz.

Not too far as I still had to use some of the machines to prep this lot. I use 4 of the beams for this project as they are approximately 2 1/2" square and 10ft long. Now I need to clean some of the machines as it has gummed some of them up.

I have already had a cuppa and a sit down once I finished them and the wife has also done a test on both and is very happy

They are just over the 3/4" as the originals the width is 2 1/4" again as the originals. The good thing is that both benches have identical sized slats

it looks almost identical to some meranti that I used up from an old door, so I am guessing meranti as well, it's very hard to tell though with those pictures, not something to worry about too much, the new wood looks much better.
