I'm new to turning and recently bought a lathe that came with a bunch of tools and a pretty hefty looking chuck, similar to this one:

I was turning a little piece of olivewood when i caught the edge of my tool, though not particularly badly, which is when one of the jaws broke in half. While one half stayed nicely in the chuck the other came off at 2215rpm and hit me square below the sternum.

so i need new jaws or a new chuck (potentially a new rib)
what chucks do you recommend for turning mostly very small items with the occasional bowl thrown in?

Folks will really need the details of the spindle thread before they can give you any informed suggestions on available chucks.

By the way, that is not a Wood Turning Chuck, it is an independent 4 jaw Metal turning Chuck* and would be highly dangerous used for wood turning in all but specialist tasks using the tailstock for support to prevent the wood flying out of those jaws.

*and a poor budget version at that.

I would throw that away, for woodturning go for a dedicated woodturning chuck any of the well know brands. Check what range of jaws you can get and that you may need in the future this will help with chuck selection. A lot of people have the axminster chucks and say they are good.
I have the Robert Sorby Patriot chuck and find it does everything that I ask of it

You'll need more than a new rib using that chuck for woodturning. At the very least a collar bone and an eye socket, I would think.

Ah right sorry the spindle thread is ¾" x 16TPI, which i think is fairly standard but you can get thread adaptors can't you?
I knew it wasn't the best quality thing but i didn't expect this:

I was tempted to buy better quality jaws for it but now i'll definitely just go for a good, self centering chuck.
