I am just wondering what books people here would recommend on finishing wood?

ideally I wan't something very detailed, that covers all grounds,

cheers,

Ben.

I suppose someone should plug something by Bob Flexner given how influential he is online.

His original book, "Understanding Wood Finishing: How to Select and Apply the Right Finish". It's a great ground-up guide to wood prep, finishes and how to apply them. Look for the revised edition, this was originally published in 1994 so it was in need of updating when the 2nd edition came out.

His other book that's mentioned a lot is "Flexner on Finishing: Finally - Answers to Your Wood Finishing Fears & Frustrations" I've not read that one so don't really know what it's like inside, but it's sure to be clear and no-nonsense like all his writing.

Edit: if you're after the Hosker book mentioned by Phil there are two 1p copies of this listed on Amazon currently!

This has come up before.
What Bob Flexner is doing is great. He explains the various different basic types of finish. And he links that back to commercial products, giving factual information which the manufacturers keep quiet about and cutting through their inconsistent use and misuse of product names.

The trouble is, he only does this for US products not available here. I think there's a gap in the market for similar books geared to UK products.

That's true Andy (presumably also true of the Jeff Jewitt book given it's Taunton book) but with a bit of investigation nearly all of it can be ported across.

Obviously he won't cover some stuff like hard wax oil but then most books don't include those because they're so new to the market.

I've got the Complete Illustrated Guide to Finishing coming, annoyingly it cost me £19.99 and it's now gone down lol hate it when that happens, if I need more info then I'll get the bob flexner book, I found some really videos with him explaining different finishes on youtube.
