Morning all

As its my birthday today (AH HEM!) I received an amazon voucher from my sister.

I potentially have some projects coming up including a new workshop and possible house extension and would like a book that will give me some guidance in roofing.

Are there any standard "bibles" for this subject?

Many thanks

Hello Mick,

In my opinion there is only one way to work out a cut roof and that is with a Smallwood (now G.Gibson) No 390 Steel square, when you buy one of these you get a book with it showing you how to use it.

Failing that you can buy a Roofing Ready Reckoner (book) that will give you all the lengths and angles.

The thing with roofing is that there is always something waiting to catch you out!

Hello Mick,

I have just found my old collage books and they have quite a good write up on roofing as well as all other aspects of carpentry.

They are - M&E Technical Crafts Series. Carpentry & Joinery. Book 1 & 2. By David R Bates.

Might be worth a look on Ebay. I still use them for reference today and they still help.

If you need help with your roof let me know and I will try to help if I can. If you go ahead and buy a Gibson roofing square I dont think you would regret it as you can use it for different squarey things in the workshop, my square is one of my most treasured tools.

Cheers, Merlin
