Book on Domestic Architecture?

That is to say a guide to the different styles of housing to be found in the UK (specifically the south of England I believe). Christmas request from my sister-in-law, presumably to assist her in her estate agent work. 8-[ Don't hold it against her; she's a nice person, honest. You should have seen how embarrassed she was announcing the change of career. :lol:

Anyway, given the wide range of knowledge to be found within the membership of this illustrious forum, I thought it was worth a shot to ask for any recommendations rather than just take pot luck on Amazon. Anyone?

The problem with these types of books is that they normally focus on one specific period, ie victorian houses, neo-classical etc. However, there is one titled 'Houses of Britain - the outside view' by J Prizman which goes through both different periods and regional variations. The problem is that it is no longer in print. That said I have seen it for sale through specialist web-sites and those that sell second hand books. It was published by Blue Circle cement presumably to sell the pros of rendering to houses but does cover all styles. I should stress that this does not go into terrific details about construction etc but you did say it was for an estate agent :lol: I will have a look and see if I can find any more information ( I have the book but its at work and I am not in the office till later this week). Just had a quick look and the link below has a copy but sure there will be others as well.

Also the BRE (Building Research Establishment) have a very comprehensive book on non-traditional housing which goes through all non-trad housing types including structure and possible defects over the past 70 years or so but I warn you it is mega expensive.

Well that's a comfort; Houses of Britain is one of the two we've gone for. It's in print and available from Amazon. The other being "Details: A Guide to House Design in Britain" by Philippa Lewis, with the hope that it'll deal with the insides... :lol: Many thanks for your help.

Another good one which I had forgotten about is 'Inspections and Reports on Dwellings - Assessing Age' by Ian Meliville and Ian Gordon. The book seems to be aimed at those working the homebuying and selling industry so may also be of use.
