My wife would like me to make a bed for her. She'd like the wood to be stained black. I'm going to use maple but I'm not exactly sure how to finish. I prefer to leave my wood natural and seal it with boiled linseed and/or Waterlox.

I usually avoid using polyurethanes or varnishes on my products but something like that would be ideal for this project. I'm looking for a finish that is matte -- something that will only serve to seal the stain into the wood, not provide a glossy topcoat.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Best pure black stain I ever used was India ink. You would need rather a lot for a bed though...

At the risk of posting an unashamed plug (but I don't see I have much choice) can I suggest our Black Spirit Stain. Very black, will do what you want and should be compatible with your normal finishing method.
