A friend of mine is thinking about using black oxide iron nails in oak flooring in his bathroom finished with Osmo oil. The manufacturers claim that black oxide prevents staining in oak yet other supplier's sites say 'not suitable for oak'.

Does anyone have any experience of this combination (black oxide nails/oak/Osmo/water) ?

TIA

Black Oxide Iron Nails are basically powder coated iron nails. Typically, when mixing woods like oak with iron, the natural tannins in the wood react with the iron nails and create whats called tannin stains. This stain can vary from Grey to Black.

Treated Nails are designed to stop or limit the amount of reaction that occurs by removing the direct contact between wood and the nail. Personally, I would double check with the retailer that these are suitable for what your friend is intending to do. But realistically, I think you will be fine.

Roger when you nail your floor down think what the hammer will do to that coating on the top of the top of the head, it won't be there by the time the nail is driven home. Just like the black passivate coating comes off the phillips socket in a drywall screw and leaves rust spots in teh skim.

You can get stainless rose nails

Also are rose/clasp cut nails the right choice, just cut nails would be better for flooring if you want a traditional look and less chance of splitting the wood and better holding.
