While not on the scale on Keith 66's post, I had my own bit of luck on 'tinterbay

Got a lump of Mahogany, 7'5" x 11" x 2" for a ten pound note :)

Laid out with my No5 for scale

Scratched a bit off one end

And gave it a wipe for your delectation

Not sure what i'm going to do with it yet, but should be nice wood - came out of the seller's grandfather's loft where he used to store his timber (man after my own heart)

Can anyone spot the species from the few photo's ?

Isn't that from the jammius illigitimus species? On a similar bit of luck yesterday, I was chatting to a friend on Friday about being let down by a couple of mates who have said they could get some wood. He said 'What are you after?', me 'Dunno, really, scraps of hardwoods so I can make laminate boards for scrollsawing, stuff for some small boxes, maybe some softwoods for carcass frames etc.', to cut a long story short, I got a phone call yesterday, with the upshot being I'm getting a couple of lumps of oak and a bit of mahogany tomorrow :)

Nice one Reggie - perhaps someone is smiling on woodies this week as I was given a piece of Oak on Saturday for exactly the same thing as the mahogany is intended - practice

Was warned that it was very hard wood, but haven't had a play with it yet (double entendre's like 'playing with my wood' deliberately ignored)

Either Utile or 2nd choice sapele.
