My wife decided to surprise me with something for my birthday. She had heard me remark about a power saw ( a very old one) which I had had to ditch as it had given up the ghost. So talking with of her friends (whose husband is in the trade) she put her onto a site for power tools for professionals. On the day opened the pressie to find a top of the range Dewalt power saw... I could not believe my eyes... something I would not buy for myself because I could not justify the expense, bear in mind I am a retired amateur who merely dabbles at making sawdust. Unfortunately it was for professionals and was 115V !

I think my wife was more upset than me but fortunately the company offered a full refund when I explained what had happened.

Anyone had similar experience?

Not had the same experience but we once had a £20k server come over from the US and one of my guys plugged the 110v server into 230v UK mains power. There was quite a big blue flash, lots of smoke and then a lot of darkness, then a bit of anger and then a lot of ribbing.

Me too. Only a 3K desktop PC, though.

Happened to me too a few years ago, funnily enough also on a Dewalt saw which I had ordered from Screwfix. Can't even blame my wife, in my excitement to get new shiny things I clicked over enthusiastically without reading properly. Chap I spoke to at Screwfix couldn't have been nicer about it and they arranged to deliver a 240V version and uplifted the other saw. Happened all the time apparently.

The happy ending is that the joiners I had working in my house then nicked the replacement saw from my garage to which I had stupidly given them access, and it turned out "outbuildings" were not covered by my house contents insurance. £400 down on the deal and several lessons learnt.

Onward and upwards.
