That's nice of you to say so Chris, but it really was no trouble. It's a small step from virtual help to actual help, and we've all benefited from the assistance given so freely on here.

I'll be interested to see how those heavy great lumps turn into lovely mallets though!

I wanted some lignum vitae for bearings on a model steam engine, so I blind-bid for some old bowling balls in a local auction - won them too...

...anyone want some nice plastic bowling balls ?

As an aside: do you know a lot about steam models?
My neighbour died last year leaving his lifelong project, a sizeable steam loco, unfinished. there is also .a smaller one which looks complete.
His widow is looking to sell but struggling to find the best way to sell such specialised projects.
Any advise for her would be welcomed
He was an electrical engineer and a perfectionist and it looks like quality work to me.

Bob

bob my advice would be to approach a local model engineers soc, as they would have members interested in projects such as this.

There's lots of Model Engineering clubs dotted around the country. There should be one local to you?
Have you tried a search?
The Model Engineer mag. has a web page which might list club news?
My friend down here had just bought a lot of unfinished stuff just recently from a widow in his club.

Was he a member of a Model Engineering society ? A lot of societies will auction a deceased member's stuff at a club night, usually getting a better price than a public auction would produce. If he wasn't a member, it might still be worth her contacting the local society to see if they're interested - there's a list here : http://www.modeleng.org/ukclubs.htm.

Also worth advertising in 'Model Engineer' (http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/) and 'Engineering In Miniature' (http://www.teepublishing.co.uk/eim/) magazines - the latter definitely has free adverts for stuff like that, the former may do too.

Thanks for that.

I'll have a chat with her over the weekend.

They can fetch a lot of money depending on the model and the scale.
I know somebody paid £18k for a 7 1/4 scale loco recently!
