I have given the whole machine a wire brushing with a hard wire brush in an angle grinder
then with a flap disc sand any large chips away
then with a small foam roller ( 25mm dia and 100mm long )paint with hammerite ....repeat and its done

Thanks for you help,do you wire brush away completely all the paint on the lathe? right down to the bare steel?then start to re-paint !

QD90 is thought by many to be a better paint than Hammerite. Worth a look - it's often cheaper as well.
Can you get QD90 in various colours?

Blackfriars list "quick drying" metal paint which I assume is the same in six colours, black and white- a bit limiting, although silver is there - which is probably right for a lathe.

Hi Paul

I painted my Union graduate with Hammerite hammered grey paint. It looks great when finished.

How much take it take to cover your lathe? It's averaging about £9 for 250 ml,over £40 a Litre ,which I don't think I need,Maybe 2x250 ml tins?

Hi Paul

I bought one 250ml tin which covered the lathe, but I had to buy another 250ml pot to do the tail stock, etc.

Two 250ml pots will be plenty.

I've had a quick look and found a site selling it - Wigley DIY. Two 250ml pots of silver hammered finish comes to £10.56 and postage is 3.95 so £14.51 in total.
