Thinking of taking the plunge (excuse the pun). Wanting the larger Domino machine plus plenty of Dominoes to get me started. Are there any extras that are a must? Where are the best place to buy?

Thanks

If you're only running a 700XL (as opposed to a 500 plus a 700XL) then the Seneca adaptor for smaller bits is very useful. On any Domino good extraction is essential for accurate cuts and to prevent the bit overheating, so you need to be sure your vac hose will fit.

The best deal I could find a few weeks was from Axminster.
Note there are two different packages, they come with different cutters and domino sizes.
Have a think about what size domino's you would use most before buying.
You could of course go mad and just buy all of the various domino selections (pick the ones which include the cutters) as well as the seneca RTS500 adapter then you can do everything the DF500 and 700XL can do with just the 700XL. It seemed like a good idea to me lol

Yes was thinking the adaptor was a must if only getting the one machine. Saw a UK adaptor on ebay for £45, anyone tried it?Good tip on extraction but hope my Alto machine is up to the task. Sure I can adapt it to fit one way or another.

Looked at a couple of videos that show using the alignment pins but from what I could see they were not entirely accurate for example towards the end of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UVX0VmH5rM Notice the step left. User error or should I not trust the pins?

i have a post recently on the FOG as was thinking about selling off my DF500 and buying a DF700 as i have a few big projects i want to undertake later this year afte ri move and was thinking the seneca adapters would mean my DF500 would be obsolete. The feedback i got from most was that while the seneca adapters are well made and useful they do not allow full replacement of the DF500 with a Df700. I kind of think it's a case of they work well if you dont use the smaller tennons a lot but want the option but if you make a lot of stuff with the Df500 you'll want the DF500 and just buy the DF700 and take the financial agony that ensues

Have china not started ripping off these Seneca add-ons yet ?

They are incredibly expensive for what amounts to simple things.

A Thickness gauge for $55 ? It's a piece of plastic with a label stuck on it!

1/2" Shim for $37 ? Its a single flat piece of aluminium!

$70 for a cutter adaptor ?

This is bordering on the realms of "Quality HDMI Leads"

I think the HDMI comparison is a little unfair.

Like most things that are CNC machined or made on a lathe etc it is all about tolerances. Tooling can loose accuracy with wear over time and quality control before and after machining can differ widely when something is being made at a rock bottom price.

to give an alternate example of this I used to do a lot of target air rifle shooting and can tell you know the machineing tolerances in things like trigger sears and muzzle breaks etc made a lot of difference at the upper ends of the sport and why you could start out with a £700 rifle but ultimately would end up spending thousands of pounds on one.

Whist i agree the seneca stuff is a bit pricey - especially by the time you get it into the UK i believe they will stand by there products if there is an issue where as no name sweat shop in China wont....

I was once told (by Festool) Festool don't do "upgraded kit". Meaning, the TS55 is meant for totally different purposes than a TS75. The TS75 isn't an upgrade from a TS55 (this was told to me as someone who had unwittingly mistaken the TS75 as an upgrade and was moaning about its short-comings). It's not the German way apparently. So therefore, any cludge/adaptor/'call it what you will' to get a DF700 working in the same way as a DF500 is just that, a cludge. You're supposed to buy both machines if you need to do what both machines do. That's the Festool line.

Some truth there, wrapped around a fancy looking kerching.

Its a great way to justify selling two pretty similar machines and saying why of course you need both.
Interestingly when I mentioned to the festool rep that I had bought the seneca adapter for my 700xl so I could do all the things the df500 could, he just nodded in agreement. I expect this is something he finds with a lot of hobby users as they can't justify the cost of buying both.
I can't see why you would need the df500 if you have the 700xl with the seneca adapter so perhaps someone can enlighten me?

I had the df500 before i got the df700. I thought about selling the 500 and getting the adaptors but felt it really is not worth it when you've already got bot. I wouldnt even make much cash and this way I have a smaller machine for the smaller work.

The df700 is pretty big if you end up doing a lot of 12/18mm ply work with the smaller dominoes. If I was starting again I suppose it would make financial sense to go 700 and adaptors but how much do you actually save after you got the cutters etc?

I get that - in the case of the Domino machines at least, real world again vs marketing. Would he put it on a Powerpoint slide for Festool GMBH Directors to peruse, not on his nelly :)

TS55 vs TS75? I went MT55 instead after selling on the TS75. The power was good on the 75, but the dust collection sucked* compared to the TS55.

*By sucked, I of course mean less sucky, in a bad way.

If you want to invest in a fair bit of useful kit, my advice would be to buy an XL combo kit, one of these;

XL machine with 8/10mm systainer pack; http://www.powertool-supplies.co.uk/fes ... m-sys.html

XL machine with 12/14mm systainer pack; http://www.powertool-supplies.co.uk/fes ... m-sys.html

XL machine with 5 boxes of Domino pack; http://www.powertool-supplies.co.uk/fes ... no-xl.html

and then get the Seneca adapter and the 4/5/6/8/10mm systainer pack; http://www.powertool-supplies.co.uk/fes ... 0x-bu.html

This will give you a huge range of cutters from the 500 and 700 along with a good range of dominos.

I appreciate most retailers have similar prices however I find N&B generally have stock whereas the other stockists sometimes have issues. I'm not affiliated with N&B, just a very happy customer and find they go the extra mile, no matter the size of the order.
