Benefits of immigration?

I do not wish to start an argument of any sort, but I would like to know the views of anyone interested, does immigration benefit this country? I would be the first to say yes, but, my own experiences lead me to a "tailored immigration policy, at the hospital where I am employed as a maintainence engineer, we have 3 lots of foreigners working there, the polish are concientious and polite and speak english as do the portuguese, the contingency from the African continent are the opposite, they move very slowly and speak in a language I can't understand, and loudly too!, now I earn x amount per year, these new arrivals from Africa have a mobile phone and they all drive new nissan cars, how is this? I drive a secondhand volvo,are they given these as a gift, if so who is paying for this?some of them are driving 4x4s, now as to the benefits to this country, I know that the polish and portuguese send money back to their respective countries because they tell me, the Africans do the same,
at the last xmas party, no Africans turned up, despite the meal being free, drinks had to be payed for.
So, I would say yes to letting foreigners in but only if they are willing to carry their own weight, as I have to.
MODS, If you think this thread is unreasonable, shut it down, I will not be offended and will understand,
but at the end of the day, it has to be discussed somewhere, and this is a good a place as any, after all we are all grownups.

Foreigners and immigration I reallyu do not have a problem with if
1. they at least learn our language
2. carry their own weight and dont use our services untill they paid in
3. are courteous and homest.
4. invite me round for lunch but it has to be a real proper polish/african/indian blah blah meal none of that "styled for the english" malarky.

After all we visit their homes on holiday etc or migrate, I would expect to do no less in their home country.

Benefits of immigration?

Well, my grandfather got a job on the trawlers in Grimsby, which he hadn't been able to do back home in Norway.

My other grandfather worked as an engineer for London Transport - there was no real work like that back in Ireland, and he wanted to get away from the church.

My uncle in Australia got a job in the open air - he had been a Japanese prisoner of war, and he was pretty traumatised. He couldn't face England in 1946.

My son is working in Silicone Valley. He couldn't do the same stuff in the UK.

Does my wife's great-grandfather who walked down from Scotland looking for work count?

One of my cousins has retired to Florida for the weather, and another one is working in Oz. Oh, and another Uncle went out to work in Canada, because after the war the prospects were so much better.

Just picked up my Polish wifes' parents from stansted.
Believe me they are not ignorant.
Can't say the same about the people who surrounded us at lakeside shopping centre. (had to visit Ikea - I know but even a cabinet maker can't make it as cheap as they can)
Ignorant is the word I would use there !

I couldnt care less who lives in MY country.

However as Momo said

1)Speak English as your 1st language. (while here)
2)Abide the rules and laws of this country, pay into it.....
3)Dont abuse our welcome.

I thinks thats fair and its what anyone would want if I went to there home country.

If people want to come here and they abide the rules then I think they should want to be part of Britain. I would say England but Im not qualified to speak for Scotland, Wales and possibly Cornwall.

I teach a lot of Polish kids. They are great, bright and wanting to learn, polite and conscientious. Yes, all of them.

I don't want to compare them to the locals...

My youngest son had a Polish girlfriend for a while. Apart from being very beautiful she was one of the best-educated young woman I have met in years. Like so many, though, she had to go back to look after her parents. I wonder how many of the present tranche of immigrants will put down roots and stay?

If i went to Poland i would respect the Polish people as i am a guest in their country.

Just been discussing that as well.
A lot of young Poles have come to the Uk for an adventure as much as anything.
If you believe the Daily Mail Poland is a poverty stricken third world country.
Believe me its not.
Many aspects of Polish life that I find positive are sadly dissapearing from Britain.
Family life, respect for elders by children, a good standard of education for all I could go on.
So much that my wife and I are moving abroad this year (either Finland or Poland).
Its not the influx of immigrants that made us think of moving.
Rather the dumbing down of life in the uk.
My viewpoint anyway...

I decided a long time ago that judging relative wealth by the car someone drives is a non-starter. Firstly it depends on where in your list of financial priorities a car comes, secondly it depends on what _else_ you spend your money on - rented room in a shared house, or mortgaged 4 bed? Thirdly, you may have noticed that finance companies are keen to lend money - must have something to do with the interest, eh Personally, I'd rather drive an older car I own than a newer one the bank owns...

On the mobile phone, welcome to the 21st century, everyone has a mobile phone and they're cheap cheap cheap. I'm wondering when we'll see our first in-cot mobile phones. :roll:

As to the immigration point, it's my view that immigration has a neutral/positive impact. I don't have much to back that up I'm afraid, apart from the anecdotal cases of hardworking immigrants doing jobs which we can't convince those born here to do. Imported nursing staff from around the world etc etc

My wife had one it was called twomy or such, kid wanted her you heard whaaaaaaa all over ther front room, and she ran upstairs like a lemon at his beck and call. Sim free, no line charges and best of all plugs into the mains. Oh and great hands free kit.

Well, we seem to be making progress here, but you seem to be missing my point, the important word in my posting was "BENEFIT" Do we as a nation benefit from the immigrants or do the immigrants benefit from the nation, at the end of the day, this planet is getting smaller by the day, and if we don't take the opportunity to plan for the future of our own children now, we may not be able to choose who we share our bed with,
cultures by their own virtue, are, what they are, that's what makes the world so diverse, and that's why, in my opinion they don't mix, that's not to say they cannot live together, rather, don't try and change a mans character just to suit economic conditions as the present government is doing, bio-engineering in my opinion.

Yes, my family has benefited greatly from immigration. We are all much better off since we came to England.

I think we may have made a contribution to society along the way.
