A plate like that would stop the top of the hole from being damaged, and 'busting out', but the holdfast grips further down the hole too. Your bench holes would eventually wear - but it would be quite a bit better than just a bare wooden hole.

What size (model no.) holdfasts are they?

Cheers, Vann.

model no is m145 by marples
Mine are No.145 too - I think all of mine are labelled "Record", but they're the same.

That's a pity because you can buy collars for the No.146 I believe, but not for the No.145.

You could go with your stainless plate idea, or get someone with a lathe to turn up a few more collars. I was able to buy another (2nd hand) No.145 to get enough collars for my bench.

Cheers, Vann.

Can I ask how much you paid for them?
Me, or Lurcher?

I don't know how relevant the prices are - TradeMe prices in New Zealand tend to be below UK Ebay prices - but after watching a few sell for over $65 NZD (~£32.50) I picked up a No.145 for $45 (~£22.50) complete with two collar sets, instruction manual, and tatty box. The sellers claimed "Brand New Never Used". I was pleased.

I still haven't fitted the extra collars to my bench

Cheers, Vann.

i got the marples boxed with 1 collar for £16.00 plus £6.00 p and p
i got another from the boot sale £6.00
and 1 more from the boot sale £10.00
all in perfect orde and man are they very very useful

The collared type will mash your bench if used without some kind of collar, the stainless plate sounds good, or you could try a search for 'pipe flanges'.

The traditional forged ones are much kinder to bench tops, especially if you countersink the dog holes a couple of mm.

How about 20mm washers? They might save both time and a bob or two.

You could double up and drill two together (or even three).
Then drill and tap them (in 3 places at 120 degrees) and pass bolts through them and the benchtop to another washer at the bottom...

Cheers, Vann.
