i bought a cheap bench grinder from b and q, for generall use. i didnt use it a great deal, so i bought a few bits from this shop http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/

an adaptor to put on a polishing mop
a polishing mop itself
some scotchbrite type disks for producing a satin finish.

I have used it a bit since for buffing timber tool handles, and on some brass parts to produce a satin finish. It is ok for my hobby use. it may be slightly underpowered if using it professionally or all day/every day, but then again it only cost about 20 quid, and another 15 for the extra bits.

The draper will not be the perfect machine for metal polishing, but will do the job. if you are planning on doing huge amounts, spend a bit more and look at more powerful motors, possibly purpose built machines.

The supplier I linked to I found to be excellent and I will use again when i need more bits.

I set up using an old washing machine motor as an immeadiate answer but found the speed too slow. The idea was to throw it away afterrwards if necesssary. This was after burning out an old black B and D drill. The bearings collapsed due to the side pressure but it lasted quite a while, but not long enough. If you buy a dedicated polisher I think the bearings will be suitably sized, etc to take side pressure which is considerably more than sharpening chisels and plane irons. I dont know prices but I would buy a polisher if you can. I still have to finidsh a job ...a motor bike restortion. The professional machines make it look easy with large motor and big wheels. Let me know if I can tell you anything else as I stood for weeks polishing the aluminium cases. Havent tried polishing wood. I also used the bits from the Polishibg shop. Best wishes.
