I've just seen the workzone 500w bench drill in Aldi and I'm wondering what people think of it compared to say the screwfix Titan http://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb556d ... 240v/16108? I've never owned a bench drill and pretty sure I'd like one for use in wood only. If it's accurate and reliable enough I might pop back and grab one.

I bought the workzone one from aldi and for the price i think its good value and plenty accurate enough for my needs. i did check and the drill bit is square. The column is not overly long though.

the scewfix one you linked look pretty much the same just rebranded.

Morning Pike

Have you got a link for the Aldi drill please?

I can't find it.

Cheers

Dave

Dave, sorry I haven't. Can't see it on the web site but they had them in my local store yesterday. If you google workzone aldi drill bench there's a few links and a youtube vid.

I recently sold my lidl pillar drill, the quill had horizontal movement in it. The table flexed under pressure and the thumb screws were naff. I watched the free ads for a month and picked up a startrite for £70, much better value

I think I'll save up for something better. Maybe floor standing. Don't want to have to transport or fettle something second hand though, unless everything new really is rubbish.

Drilling with a brace and bit or a hand held electric/battery drill is rarely very accurate and I would have thought that a cheapo bench drill press was really better than struggling freehand on a bit of repetition drilling.
Unless of course you really need to drill to engineering standards.
You can either buy a sooper dooper drill or similar, and blow a reasonable budget or just get the best you can to make the harder jobs a bit easier and more fun in the workshop.
It may be an idea for you get the cheapo morticer that is also a drill, save space and expense.
I've got an old APT morticer, bought it when they were just in the original shop, by the car park.
I got 3 chisels with it, saves all that bashing and walloping, makes life easier, the dog is happy as i'm less inclined to kick
it up the jacksie when it chews up my pencils!
Regards Rodders
